he Caltrans community meeting originally scheduled for March 6 to discuss the plans for a raised median on Florida Avenue has been rescheduled for March 20.
The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Simpson Center at 305 E. Devonshire Ave. in Hemet. Caltrans officials said they need additional time to prepare exhibits necessary for the meeting.
Caltrans’ plans to install a raised median along an 8-mile stretch of Florida Ave/Highway 74 from Cawston Avenue to the Ramona Expressway in Hemet, and ultimately all the way to Lake Elsinore, has garnered criticism from residents and business owners.
A June meeting drew a large crowd of such people, many of whom were vehemently against the proposal because they feel that dividing Florida Avenue with a raised median will destroy the small-town feel and will hinder such community events as parades and will negatively impact response times for first responders. People also have expressed that the raised median will be a likely gathering place for panhandlers, as well as restricting access to businesses with fewer entry and exit points via turn pockets.
